Notes and handouts

Open Notes in the campaign sidebar to see every note you can read, and to write your own. The Campaign notes tab on the campaign home shows only the notes shared with the whole party.

Click New note. Notes are written in Markdown:

You type You get
# Title, ## Section Headings
**bold**, *italic*, ~~struck~~ bold, italic, struck
- item or 1. item Lists
> text A quote
` a

Switch between Edit and Preview with the buttons above the text. Beholder saves on its own about a second after you stop typing, and when you leave the field or switch notes. The indicator next to the author shows Saving… or Saved.

Insert image uploads a JPEG, PNG or WebP picture (up to 20 MB) to your server and adds it where your cursor is. Only images from your server are shown, never pictures from other websites. Links are shown underlined with their address, but they can’t be opened from inside the app.

Every note has an audience, shown as a label on the note:

Label Who can see it Who can edit it
Private Only you Only you
DM only A private note written by the DM The DM
Party Every member of the campaign Every member
Shared You and the members you picked You and those members

Only the author can change the audience or delete a note. Click Who can see this to change it.

If the DM turned on The DM can read players’ private notes in the campaign settings, the DM can also read (not edit) your private notes. Every player can check this setting under Campaign rules.

Hiding is done by the server: a note you can’t see is never sent to your computer.

The author of a note sees a Reveal to party button. One click shares the note with everyone, and it appears on their screens right away. To hide it again, set the audience back to Only me: it disappears for the others.

Two people can edit a shared note at the same time. If the server receives your edit after someone else’s, it doesn’t throw yours away: it keeps it as a conflict copy, private to you, and the original keeps the other person’s text. A banner on the original links to your copy. Merge what you need into the original, then delete the copy.

If you’re typing while someone else changes the note, a warning tells you so before you save.

Notes work offline like everything else: you can create and edit them, and they’re sent when the connection returns. See Bad connections and offline play.
